In Defense of the new Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

Jesus Cortez – Writer

It’s been a week since the unveiling of the new Undisputed Championship for the Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns. Reaction to the new belt design has been mixed, with the majority seeming to dislike the title due to the same design being used since 2014. While the new Undisputed WWE Universal Championship may not be groundbreaking, here are a few reasons to enjoy the new championship.

The Gold Looks Good on The Tribal Chief

The main plate being gold is a perfect representation of the run Roman Reigns has been having as The Tribal Chief. The gold main plate works well with his heel run especially since he has been a dominant and triumphant competitor, all of which are synonymous with the color gold.

It also works well at representing his arrogance as he carries an “I can do it alone” mentality but still uses the help of The Bloodline to retain the championship.

Not Too Different

The last WWE Championship design we had was not bad at all. While the company logo took the majority of the main plate, it still had the size and look of a world championship. It looked good on every champion that held it, especially Roman Reigns. Even if the design is close to being a decade old, the design itself does not feel outdated.

Temporary Stay?

If you really don’t like the new design, you may be happy to hear that it could only be temporary. It still seems that WWE hopes to have Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns face off one more time, which is looking likely to take place at Wrestlemania 40.

At Hell in a Cell 2011, Cody Rhodes replaced the Intercontinental championship design with a take on the classic design with a white strap. If he dethrones Roman, we could see the return of an old design of the WWE Championship whether it be the Winged Eagle or a modern take on it as we saw with the new World Heavyweight Championship currently held by Seth “Freakin” Rollins.

Cody had even teased the return of the Winged Eagle earlier this year on Instagram and on WWE’s The Bump. “Through my youth, the WWE that I was watching was really synonymous with the Winged Eagle. I think there’s a lot of people who love the Winged Eagle design,” said Cody on The Bump. “Some people like the Big Eagle but the Winged Eagle was the one for me.”

Though Cody did say that “it was just a pipe dream”, the return of the Winged Eagle design looks more likely than ever, especially with Triple H in charge. Though, we won’t know until Cody Rhodes becomes the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Championship reception is always subjective and is rarely unanimously loved, especially in recent years. If you disliked the new Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, that’s understandable. However here were a few reasons why liking it is also okay.
